AI Vision and Values Statement
Juan Diego embraces AI’s educational possibilities, while also providing guidance to use it wisely.
With the arrival of generative artificial intelligence and artificial intelligence assisted technologies (AI), the world has shifted, and in no area more so than education. As we navigate the opportunities and challenges present with AI, Juan Diego’s identity as a Catholic institution “rooted in Catholic values and morals in developing the whole person” must be kept in mind as we go forth into a new era in education.
AI’s possible applications to quality education are innumerable: brainstorming, editing, data analysis, image and video creation, problem solving, and streamlining student learning. But already, we and the wider education world have seen the pitfalls: plagiarism, misinformation, and many activities that undermine the very core tenet of being a motivated learner.
Juan Diego is proud of our long history of incorporating cutting edge technologies into our rigorous, respected academic programs, and AI will not be any different. We will be vigilant to ensure transparency, honesty, and learning from all stakeholders.
In this process, we believe the values of transparency and honesty, learning, and ethical use are paramount and must align to JD’s mission and Catholic values.
Values
Transparency and Honesty → To best ensure responsible AI usage, all users should be forthcoming with how they’re using AI. AI cannot exist in a thriving educational space if all stakeholders are not honest about the use of AI in their work. Instead of secrecy and shame, we value transparency and honesty.
Learning → A critical value to responsible AI use is learning, and ensuring that we’re always using AI to enhance and expand our learning, never to short-cut or short-circuit it. Much of the fear around AI in education is because of its ability to circumvent true learning, and so above all, learning needs to be valued.
Ethical Use → All AI users are responsible for its ethical use, and should keep in mind our school’s Catholic values and morals that develop the whole person when using AI. We are then motivated by doing what is right, above all.
Principles
At Juan Diego, we will…
- Consult and discuss to the greatest extent possible AI policies, practices, possibilities, and concerns with a wide range of stakeholders including faculty, students, parents, educational experts, and industry leaders.
- Prioritize safety, security, and protecting sensitive information.
- Review and revise our academic integrity policies relating to AI technology as needed to provide clear expectations for the community.
- Explore innovative applications for AI in the classroom and provide professional development for faculty.
- Continue to advocate for transparent, ethical, and equitable technology usage.
- Inform the community about major developments in AI and their impact on academic endeavors.

In light of our values - transparency, honesty, and learning - it needs to be stated clearly: work produced, even only in part, by AI tools, is not regarded as the student’s own work. Therefore, any ideas, quotes, research, sources, text, images, graphs, artwork, or anything derived from AI, needs to be declared as part of the assignment, and cited properly. Without proper citation, the work could be deemed plagiarized and thus subject to academic dishonesty policies. If students are unsure about AI use they should always consult with teachers before submitting work. Students must take responsibility for all submitted work.
