Renaissance
Saint John the Baptist Catholic Elementary School integrates Star Reading, Star Math, and CMB (Curriculum-Based Measurement) by Renaissance into their comprehensive assessment strategy to monitor and enhance student learning.
These assessments are administered five times throughout the academic year, ensuring continuous evaluation and support for each student's progress. Star Reading and Star Math provide adaptive, personalized assessments that adjust in real-time to accurately reflect each student's literacy and math skills, from basic concepts to advanced topics.
The CMB assessments complement this by offering regular, brief evaluations that track students' proficiency in specific curriculum areas. The detailed reports generated by these tools enable educators at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Elementary to identify individual strengths and areas needing improvement, allowing them to tailor instruction effectively. This systematic approach helps ensure that every student receives the targeted support necessary to achieve their academic potential and succeed in their educational journey.
Accelerated Reader
Accelerated Reader is a curriculum-based assessment tool that provides a summary and analysis of results to enable teachers to monitor both the quantity and quality of reading practice engaged in by their students. Students administer comprehension tests voluntarily themselves, and the system is intended specifically to have strong formative effects on subsequent learning.
Most books have an Accelerated Reader (AR) quiz. Each book is assigned a point value based on the number of words it contains and its reading difficulty, as derived from a formula based on the well-known Flesch-Kincaid readability index that considers the number of syllables in words and sentence complexity.
After reading, the student accesses his/her account on a school computer and takes a multiple-choice comprehension test on the book’s content. Tests may have 5, 10, or 20 items, depending on the length and difficulty of the book. The computer scores the test, awards the student points based on the results, and keeps a complete record.
